Review:
Push-Button Saviour is making his debut on Torrentech netlabel with some pretty good stuff. Donations & Medications is a downtempo album with no breaks between tracks, and it naturally flows from track to track, in the best Boards Of Canada manner. I'm repeating myself, but how can I even think of not mentioning them when their influence here is definitely huge and confirmed by artist?

Message from author:
"Donations And Medications" was recorded during 2002-2004, using a PowerMac 9600 running Peak 2.6 (for sample editing) Reason 2.5 (for sequencing/arrangement) and T-RackS (for 'loudness maximization'). The resulting recordings were made available for streaming via www.pushbuttonsaviour.com and later www.poweredbysound.org (both expired domains) but the songs were never made available for sale nor download. After failed attempts at clearing unlicensed samples used in it's creation, I've decided to make it available for free via Torrentech.org instead of putting it up for sale via the iTunes store.

The songs that make up "Donations And Medications" were written during a turbulent period which involved massive changes taking place all at once: being laid off from a job, a breakup with a girlfriend, and a forced change of residence. The "Push-Button Saviour" (or PBS-9623) was initially a nickname given to the system made up of the aforementioned PowerMac 9600 computer plus the keyboards and controllers which were used to create this music. The PBS-9623 was a configuration of devices which, seemed to - at the push of several buttons - make all symptoms of emotional distress (as well as the ability to perceive the passage of time) vanish into thin air, thus providing a form of temporary 'salvation'.

In a sense, it could be said that the music on "Donations..." was done as a form of therapy, an exercise in capturing recordings that evoked good memories of an era that had come to an end, in place of dwelling on the suffering of changes that were taking place simultaneously. The "Donations" in question are here for whoever chooses to accept them. Hopefully they will serve as "Medications" for those of you who are able to assimilate what messages are carried within the music presented here.

Respectfully,
Daniel Salomón

I'm having some trouble with the download, but hopefully it'll be sorted soon.

Music is indeed therapy - I discovered it at the hardest points in my life too - and I find this is normally when we write the more heartfelt music. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I don't want to download the torrent because my ratio sucks at the moment. So I downloaded it from the archive, and it's all fine except the last track won't unzip. I've had this problem before, unfortunately, and completely reinstalled winrar but it hasn't helped. It's in scenarios like this I think it would be really useful to have releases alternatively as MP3s, and available as seperate files instead of as a zip.

Anyway sorry, I don't want to hi-jack the thread, but I haven't listened to the album yet as I want to wait until I have the whole thing.

I don't think anyone else will have a problem. This happened to me whilst getting some stems for a remix comp the other day. I don't know why - winrar is normally really solid. But I think I'm going to have to change to another software.

This is getting quite annoying now. PushButton kindly sent me the remaining FLACS which wouldn't decompres...but now they won't convert from FLAC to MP3. I doubt this is a coincedence, as I've been using Foobar and WinRAR all day with no troubles.

I don't know what the forum rules are about uploading alternative formats of netlabel releases, but if Pyc and the guys are cool with it I'd love to get this upped at V0 or 320. Not being able to get it makes me want it all the more wink.gif

Well Josh, you should really fix your system... smile.gif Check your RAM, I would say it's likely that something is broken. It's really unnecessary that we make other formats available when there are FLACs.. If you want me to let you download releases from me in 320 kbps, OK, but I first have to make them... PM me if it's necessary...

Yeah it's really very strange, but like I say I've been using WinRAR and Foobar all day - before and after trying to sort this one out - and it didn't work.
I'll give it one more try. It could be that my computer was screwing about at the time - things were running a tad slowly. I'll report back, sir wink.gif

And about the Flac->mp3 of course it's your final decision (evil admin, you command I obey!) but I really do think there's nothing wrong with versatility. For instance, in this scenario when a download doesn't work for some reason I'd really like to just download two tracks instead of all 9. Also I like to link from my website to the netlabels I'm a part of, but I think that once a lot of people start seeing FLAC they'll have no idea and just give up before they've even given it a second thought. I think a netlabel that strives to be professional should also strive to be publicly accessable - not too elitest - which means seperate song downloads and alternative formats. But it's only a suggestion - if I really have such a strong opinion about it I should set up my own label, but I'm far too lazy for that, so erm...do as you like! wink.gif

Cheers!

Makes some sense... Will make 320 kbps mp3 versions available for DL, too...It's a bit of time consuming job so it will be hopefully done in near future wink.gif

Just request it from us lazy artists! I always convert mine to MP3 anyway. Just set us the standard and we can do it. LAME at 320CBR sound fine?

Nice work, especially on tracks 1, 2 and 3 which is my favorite. =)

Edit : Track 3 made me remember about an amazing track, at first I couldn't remember about the ID but I finally found it in my Itunes, it's Svefn G Englar by Sigur Ros. =)

SPOTTED! Track 3 does, in fact, contain a sample of Sigur Ros. Had I been able to license this sample, I'd have made the album available for sale, as opposed to making it freely available via Torrentech. This album was completed back in 2004, I don't think Torrentech was an option back then, and (as many as there are) most netlabels I've encountered have seem short-lived... Thanks Torrentech for allowing me to reach an audience, and thank you listeners, for your feedback and comments. I'm glad these recordings have found an appreciative audience.

Ahah, I'm proud of my listening skills then. I didn't imagine anything when I thought about Sigur Ros at the end. =)
