The Slow and Painful Death of Freedom in Canada

"So perhaps it is time for us Canadians to wake up and smell the suppression -- no longer are censorships solely the purview of tin-pot dictators in far away regimes. These seemingly gradual erosions to the freedoms of assembly, expression and information in Canada are all very real"

"Security and police agencies have been increasingly conflating terrorism and extremism with peaceful citizens exercising their democratic rights to organise petitions, protest and question government policies, said Jeffrey Monaghan of the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario."

Fear And Loathing On Yonge Street: A Savage Journey Into The Heart Of Rob Ford

“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro” – Hunter S. Thompson

“He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man” – Samuel Johnson

It was 3 AM when we finally got back to the hotel room. My attorney, a giant Samoan who goes by several aliases including Dr. Gonzo and Dennis Morris, had just been screaming obscenities into the lobby of one of Toronto’s larger hotels. We were laughing like madmen. “Did you see the face on that woman?” he asked me. “When I showed her the nude pictures, she looked like she was going to give birth to a huge turd, right then and there!”

“Why did you have you have to do it right while I was handing out fridge magnets?”

“Fuck the Fridge magnets,” he advised. “I think she recognized you as the Mayor.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I answered while slicing into a grapefruit.

It had been a rough few years. There was the overspending incident. Then there was the ass grabbing incident. There was the school bus thing where I had commandeered regular transit busses. I opened the window and screamed at the city, “Don’t you people fucking understand that I can do what I want? I’m the fucking Mayor!”

Grabass? If she didn’t like it, why’s she smiling so damn hard? (Wikimedia Commons)

The phone rang and my attorney answered the phone. “What the fuck do you want at this ungodly hour!?” he bellowed into the receiver. “God fearing people are trying to sleep!” He listened and started jotting down notes. “Gawker,” he muttered, “cocaine, film. I see! Got it and thank you!”

“What the fuck was that?”

“As your attorney, I suggest that you get really drunk,” he said as he opened up the laptop computer. “Don’t these people have fucking wifi?” As I started drinking Vodka from the bottle, he started to type like a chimpanzee on amphetamines. “Those Somalis we rolled with in Parkdale took film of you huffing Peruvian tap dancing powder and are now trying to sell it.”

“What the fuck is wrong with these people?” I yelled as I stabbed the mattress with a switchblade. “I’m the fucking mayor!”

“Fuck you, I’m handling it,” he answered.

Greetings. I am a lawyer and have been contracted by Mayor Ford’s office in reference to your indicating you will post a video of Mayor Ford smoking crack cocaine. Mayor Ford denies it took place, and if such a posting occurs, it is false and defamatory and you will be held legally accountable. In reference to the video you wish to publish, Mayor Ford has his photo taken daily, sometimes with others. If the person you mention is now deceased, it is sad, regardless of his alleged background.

Please govern yourself accordingly.

Dennis Morris

“That should shut the fuckers up.”

“What the fuck do you mean by that?” I asked him. I was in a terrible state by this point as his features had begun to resemble that of a rabid iguana due to the acid we had ingested earlier.

“I mean that you’d have to be a crack smoker to know what it looks like if you were smoking crack,” he answered. “Just relax the fuck up. Take some valium. Just leave me alone.”

I looked down and saw that he was holding a knife. As I backed off slowly, I picked up the fire extinguisher that, as mayor, I had liberated from the hallway. “Just don’t call me a fucking right wing icon. I fucking hate that shit! I hate it worse than that god damn, fucking, pansy faggot Justin Trudeau!”

I dry swallowed 5 of the Valium and started to giggle. So did my attorney. “Holy shit! You’ve just eaten enough Oxycontin to give Rush Limbaugh a hard on,” he giggled. I aimed the extinguisher at his face and was going to soak the fucker down for his own good when the world started to become dark. “Fucking pansy Trudeau,” I laughed as I slowly lost consciousness.

Tyranny talking - what won't be recognized. Your country, your towns.

The fallacy of irrelevance presents an amusing comparison of a choice of phrases between the 'Great Dictator', Adolf Hitler, and the leader of the "benign dictatorship" of Canada, former Alliance Party founder and current Harper Government head of control, Stephen Harper.

Hitler quote (translated):
"Give me four years and I promise you you won't recognize your towns." as quoted in The Harvard Crimson review of The Bombing of Germany, Hans Rumpf; Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1963.

"The Conservatives under Stephen Harper are running an effective dictatorship." -Frances Russell, Winnipeg Free Press >http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/analysis/harperites-undermine-democracy-201575301.html

National Post: Stephen Harper over the years has apparently styled himself after the former Soviet dictator, utilizing portions of Joseph Stalins' philosophy in order to divide and conquer, in order to keep himself in power.

"Harper's choice of reading material has disturbed even some of his own party members. A senior conservative cabinet minister(who asked that the national post do not release his name) claims that: Harper had "read and mastered" the biography and leadership style of Russia's Communist dictator Josef Stalin, and said the prime minister has adopted some of the same tactics."He plays people off against one another, he attempts to inspire fear rather than respect, he is unpredictable and he is 100 per cent focused on eliminating the opposition," the senior Conservative explained."

Are you laying pipelines for a living?

What point are you trying to make posting a loosely related snippet from a comedy routine?
I'm not trying to interfere with nature, nor trying to make the planet safe for a Volvo I don't have. I love Carlin, but as a reply this video just doesn't make any goddamned sense.
Firstly, these corporations are the one's interfering with nature, not I!

Think a few plastic bags here and there aren't doing any harm? I'm just gonna leave this documentary out here.
1/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D41rO7mL6zM
2/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GX-y1Z1w00
3/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5ZKk11R56o

All I'm saying is the dominant archetype - whatever you wanna call it - is a tar sands oil addict. Uncle Sam and Harpie are probably cooking up a big fat shot of petroleum right now. I think it's time for rehab.

no I do not lay pipelines for living..............but i do use computers, drive cars, heat my house, use cell phones, fly in planes, travel all of which rely on "dirty oil" that helps produces waaaaay more than just fuel as lol smile.gif sure you can sit and pick out the negative all over the world and complain about this complain about that....worry about this and worry about that.............there is ALWAYS going to be poor decisions and lies and scams in ANY government, but to worry about something out of your control is quite pointless, and even if you can control it there will just be something else down the road 2 seconds later, how about as carlin says quit worrying.........I have always just found this whole dirty oil thing quite hilarious.....................these tar sands were discovered by oil sediments flowing into the athabasca river NATURALLY without human aid, its what the earth does. Its made from dead plants and animals that are compressed and heated over hundreds of millions of years. Its a part of the earth and the earth is quite capable of taking care of itself.........................but yeah you can keep bashing all this shit all you want......in fact more power to ya!! biggrin.gif it is your every right.....but the worse way to go about arguing a topic is to do it with anger and hostility......................I never get into these heated arguments because its useless and I know the vast majority of ppl are very stubborn when it comes to certain topics you can argue till your blue in the face and its the equivalent to yelling at a brick wall..................so I wont bother wasting my time, just thought I'd drop a few seeds from the side less heard and move on........not to say that that side is entirely right (which i know its not) but there is always 2 sides to every story and you got to look at both openly................Still have love for you slankoe so dont hate, I have love for all tt users that have views and opinions I may be against, but lets not start getting mad at one another for disagreeing with each others beliefs and opinions......its all about the love smile.gif .................heres a little food for thought though

i'm a huge fan of most of what i've heard from Carlin, but that rant has got to be his most off-point, pompous one ever. every time he refers to "saving the planet" should be replaced with "saving the habitability of the planet" or "saving the biosphere".

Oh I'm not trying to get anyone angry, I'm just trying to rile some people up. Sorry if I came off as hateful! I just refuse to believe that there is nothing we can collectively do to oppose the propaganda, tyranny, greed, cronyism, and aaaaalllllll that jazz. I see people constantly trying to inform the public of such things because people NEED TO KNOW. Issues this big shouldn't go unspoken about. When mainstream media fails - or worse, deceives and distracts the common people, and distorts the truth, alternative media must compensate. I believe that the internet is currently humanity's greatest tool, though at the same time, it is used against us. The propagandists are just dying to fully control the internet, and we can't let that happen!

Truth is guys, I've been having kind of a rough day and I'm finding myself in that mindset of revolt. Again, not trying to hate. Quite the opposite actually. smile.gif

I've been to a couple proper cities there.... a LONG time ago, tbh.

Vice.com: Wearing a Mask at a Canadian Protest Can Earn You a Ten Year Prison Sentence http://bit.ly/14KaLJp

Huffington Post: Who Was That Masked Person? And What Happened To Their Rights? http://huff.to/14a60GH

The Slow and Painful Death of Freedom in Canada http://huff.to/YgKZMl

So what happens when Police officers wear a mask which hides their identity, and/or covers up their mandatory I.D badges? or when a tactic is used to start an unlawful assembly using masked agent provocateurs like they were caught in Montebello Quebec as a pretext to make arrests, to crack down on peaceful lawful protesters? When officers wear a mask, remove their identify (nametags), use lethal weapons like tear gas, rubber bullets, kettling tactics, the same 10 year prison term law should apply with unlawful acts shouldn't it?, If not the law doesn't live up to scrutiny, isn't equally legal for citizens and public servants alike, and is unconstitutional.

This -- "GLOBAL TERROR THREAT" -- should be filed under the heading "Oh, right." by Noami Wolf, Author and political activist http://ow.ly/nIjsl

It is very, very easy to issue an alert for a "global terrorist threat", and to close embassies.

It is very, very interesting that this highly publicized "global alert" -- the kind of media grandstanding which, I remind you, people engaged in actually combatting terrorism NEVER engage in, so as not to tip their hand -- follows a close vote to close down NSA surveillance, in the House.

The news stories about this closing, you can tell, issue from State Dept press releases, not independent reporting.

Very predictable that -- NSA spying supporters are now using this 'global terror threat" based on "chatter" to justify -- spying on you.
Remember: Terrorism is NOT MORE DANGEROUS than Big Brother plus Guantanamo.

Big Brother plus Guantanamo is far more of a "global terror threat" to you than any other "threat."

Finally -- why again do they "hate our freedoms?" Oh yeah -- we occupy and destroy their sovereign nations, arrest and imprison the civil leaders of Palestine, and murder the children of Afghanis, Pakistanis, and Iraqis in our prisons on their soil -- without charge or trial.

Remember when Harper snuck the biggest gutting of our environmental laws in history into last year's Omnibus budget bills? In whose interests was he working? 13 months ago oil industry groups sent a letter detailing almost the exact changes the government eventually made to multiple environmental protection laws. With the recent Wikileaks release regarding the secretive TPP , it is important to understand what is at stake for Canada. This is being negotiated by Stephen Harper on behalf of corporations with no public input.

Trans-Pacific Partnership: 11 Things Harper Doesn't Want To Reveal About Uber-Secretive Trade Pact.

1. It Could Criminalize Small-Scale Downloading

Canada’s new copyright laws, passed last fall, cap the liability for unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material at $5,000, so long as the downloading is not for commercial purposes. But the TPP could force Canada to institute criminal penalties even for small-time downloaders, according to a number of consumer advocacy groups.

Canada’s top negotiator at the talks last fall refused to say whether Canada would fight for its new copyright laws in the TPP deal.

2. It Could Reduce Or End CanCon Rules

An umbrella group of U.S. media companies has been lobbying the U.S. Trade Representative to pressure Canada into repealing Canadian content rules as part of the TPP.

That has raised significant concerns among music and film and TV groups that Canada’s cultural industries could be threatened by the TPP.

3. ISPs Could Become Internet Cops

Article 16 of a leaked 2011 draft of the TPP mandates that countries create “legal incentives” for internet service providers to do their own copyright policing online. That is interpreted by many to mean that ISPs could be held legally accountable if their subscribers download illegally.

Consumer groups fear this will mean expanded monitoring of web users’ online habits, and the possibility of three-strikes-and-you’re-out rules that would cut off internet services to subscribers alleged to have engaged in unauthorized downloading.

4. Critics Call The TPP A Corporate Giveaway

U.S. House Rep. Alan Grayson, who rose to fame four years ago with his quip that the Republican health care plan amounts to hoping you “die quickly,” was recently allowed to see a draft copy of the TPP.

While he’s been banned from divulging any details, the populist Florida Democrat described it in a recent blog post as an agreement that “hands the sovereignty of our country over to corporate interests.”

He told HuffPost: "Having seen what I've seen, I would characterize this as a gross abrogation of American sovereignty … And I would further characterize it as a punch in the face to the middle class of America. I think that's fair to say from what I've seen so far. But I'm not allowed to tell you why!"

He added on his blog: “There is no national security purpose in keeping this text secret.”

5. It’s Not Secret To Lobbyists

While politicians like Grayson have to keep quiet in public about what they’ve seen, a “consultation group” likely composed of lobbyists has had access to the talks through the Canadian delegation, critics say.

OpenMedia reported it received a non-disclosure agreement the group said was mistakenly sent to them, and was apparently meant for industry insiders.

“It appears ... the Canadian government got confused about which contacts were industry lobbyists and which are from public interest groups,” OpenMedia stated.

The Harper government had previously denied that such a group existed.

6. It Could Mean Foreign Telecom Coming To Canada

This might not be something the Harper government wants to keep from the public, which is largely unhappy with the state of telecom in Canada, but it could be something it’s trying to keep out of sight of Canada’s telecom companies.

The U.S. Trade Representative recently criticized Canada’s protectionist telecom policies, along with policies in a number of other countries negotiating the TPP. That has led some to conclude Canada will come under pressure to relax restrictions on foreign ownership of telecoms.

The Tories have previously loosened foreign ownership rules in order to spur competition in the wireless market, so there is a good chance they will be receptive to further liberalization of telecom regulations.

7. Corporations Could Control Your Browsing History

One of the clauses being debated in the TPP would allow corporations to decide themselves whether internet browsers can make “temporary copies” to your computer’s history folder.

Temporary copies are a basic element of how web browsers work (it's what they use to remember your browsing history). Critics say allowing companies to control what is and isn’t copied could harm the ability of search engines to become more sophisticated. It could also have a chilling effect on tech innovation, as it could halt the development of apps that, for example, use a picture of a book cover or a part of a song to identify that book or song.

8. It Could Change Your Grocery Bill

Canada was reportedly kept out of TPP negotiations at first because of its supply management system, which controls the price of some basic grocery goods like milk and eggs.

Canada’s acceptance into the talks has been interpreted by some as meaning the Tories are willing to put the supply management system on the table. (The Tories have already ended the Wheat Board’s monopoly.)

Many Canadians would like to see the end of the “milk and eggs monopoly,” and supporters of change say freeing up the market would result in lower prices. Supporters of the current system say there is no reason to believe prices will go down without supply management, and it will make business less stable for farmers.

9. Copyright Terms Will Likely Be Expanded

The Electronic Frontier Foundation reports the TPP would amount to the most significant expansion of copyright terms in two decades.

The group says the TPP proposes to extend copyright on works created by individuals to life plus 70 years. (In Canada, it’s currently life plus 50 years). It would also expand copyright owned by corporations to 95 or 120 years after creation, depending on which proposal is accepted. This would ensure that Mickey Mouse (born 1928) would continue to be owned by Disney and would not become part of the public domain.

Critics of lengthy copyright terms argue they are bad for economic development because they restrict innovation.

10. You May Have To Do Less Copying And Quoting

The U.S. and Australia apparently want tougher rules for “fair use” exceptions from copyright law. Currently, people are allowed to copy parts of textbooks for educational purposes, or quote copyrighted materials in news articles. But a proposed “three-step test” for fair use could make it considerably harder for people to use parts of copyrighted materials in these ways.

11. Even Politicians Are Fed Up With The Secrecy

Some U.S. politicians have been pressuring President Barack Obama to open up the TPP talks to greater public scrutiny. The latest is Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, who sent a letter to the Obama administration earlier this month asking the U.S. Trade Representative to make a copy of the negotiating text available to the public.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNzgVo6YVEw

A trade agreement Canada intends to sign will have “far-reaching implications for individual rights and civil liberties,” WikiLeaks says: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/11/13/tp..._n_4266866.html

You thought Harper rigging the elections was bad? For the past few months he and his cronies have been heavily pushing an act that will enable him to do the same thing - over and over again - but this time, completely legally! Did you think Canada was a democracy?

After being passed on its third reading, the Senate is the only body which can protect Canada from the (Un)fair Elections Act. I encourage all on this site to contact Senators, write them letters, and call their offices! Sign those E-petitions; I don't even care if it you think it doesn't make a difference, I sign them anyway!

QUOTE (Occupy Canada Facebook Page)
First, the good news: organizing works.
While the Unfair Elections Act passed third reading in the House of Commons this week, it could have been much worse. The campaign to stop the bill has already made a difference and we’re not done yet.

The government was intent on passing a truly horrible piece of legislation. But because of public pressure, the government has backed down on some of the worst elements of the bill."

It will likely be an uphill battle to take the campaign to defend democracy in Canada to the Senate, given the institution is not the most democratic to begin with. But we’ve faced long odds before and won.

You can take action now by calling on the Senate to kill the bill. Our democracy depends on it.
